Pilates ring workout: a 20-minute magic circle class (a cushion works too)

A Pilates ring (magic circle) adds a squeeze or a press to familiar moves. You'll use it between your knees, around your thighs, as a strap for a stretch, under your hand, between your palms and between your ankles. No ring? Squeeze a cushion or soft ball and press out against a belt or band. Squeeze gradually, breathe out as you squeeze, and never hold your breath. The positions follow classical ring exercises and teachers' cues, and the session runs lying, side-lying, sitting, then standing, so you change position only a few times. Most of it is lying down: if you're in later pregnancy or have osteoporosis, see the swaps in the tips.

Tips

  • No ring? Use a cushion or a soft ball for the squeezes and a belt or resistance band for the outward press.
  • Squeeze gradually to a firm but comfortable effort, breathe out as you squeeze, and keep breathing.
  • This isn't a pelvic floor workout. If that's why you bought a ring, add a deliberate pelvic floor squeeze as you breathe out and let it go, and do your daily pelvic floor exercises too.
  • Ring workouts strengthen your inner thighs; they don't burn fat from them.
  • Osteoporosis? Skip the chest lift and the Hundred (both are curl-ups) and use the seated hinge in the spine stretch. Later pregnancy? Do the squeezes sitting on a chair or lying on your side.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
