Beginner Pilates workout

Every move starts in its easiest form, and head-down options are fine. Move slowly and breathe out on the effort. Before the first move, lie on your back with your knees bent and take 5 lateral breaths: in through the nose so the lower ribs widen to the sides, out through pursed lips.

Tips

  • Rest your head whenever your neck works harder than your abs.
  • If a move pinches, use its easier option or skip it.
  • Later in pregnancy, swap the moves on your back for the side-lying and all-fours ones, and ask your midwife or doctor before starting.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
