Yoga for arthritis: a 30-minute joint-friendly class with a chair

A 30-minute yoga class for people with arthritis, with a chair for every standing pose and an option to do the lying part on your bed. It follows the shape of the classes tested in trials: breathing, gentle joint movement, standing poses for strength and balance, then relaxation. There's no kneeling, no weight on bent-back wrists and nothing upside down.

Tips

  • Mild discomfort is fine; stop a pose that causes sharp pain, and ease off next time if a joint aches more the next day.
  • In a flare, do the breathing, the warm-ups and the relaxation only, and build back up over a few days.
  • If a joint becomes warm and swollen, or the pain is severe, stop and rest; get help the same day for a hot, swollen joint with a fever.
  • Use props freely: a higher chair, a cushion under your knees or thighs, a strap. If getting up from the floor is hard, do the seated chair yoga workout instead.
  • With hand or wrist arthritis, keep weight off bent-back wrists: use your forearms, fists or the chair.
  • After a joint replacement, follow your team's precautions: no crossed legs or deep hip bending after a hip replacement, and no kneeling on a new knee until you're cleared.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
