The reaching line

Wrist & forearm flow

Easy2 minNothing

Take the wrists slowly through the range a keyboard never asks for: full bend, full extension, and rotation both ways. Typing is a small, constant, unvarying load, which is exactly the kind connective tissue tolerates worst.

The dose

10 slow reps each direction, hourly if you type

How to do it

  1. 01Reach one arm forward, palm down, elbow softly straight.
  2. 02Let the hand drop into a full bend, then lift it into full extension, ten slow reps.
  3. 03Rotate the forearm palm-up and palm-down ten times, keeping the elbow still.
  4. 04Finish by spreading the fingers wide five times, then switch arms.

Mistakes that waste your reps

  • Rushing; slow end ranges are the point, not repetitions.
  • Letting the elbow swing to create the rotation instead of the forearm.
  • Pushing into sharp pain rather than a firm stretch.

Where this comes from

evidence · emergingestablished practice

Discomfort that eases as you move is normal; pain that sharpens is a stop sign. If this area is injured or persistently painful, a clinician outranks this page.

Pairs well with

Deep neck holders

Chin tuck

Slide your head straight back over your shoulders without tipping it, hold, release. The muscles meant to carry your head over your body rather than in front of it are endurance muscles, and a screen lets them quit.

→ 10 holds of 5 seconds, twice a day

Front line, chest

Doorway chest opener

Forearm on the door frame, then turn your body away. Hours of reaching forward let the tissue across the front of the chest settle into a shorter shape, and the shoulder starts every movement from there.

→ 3 holds of 30 seconds per side
