Off-the-wall yoga for climbers: a 25-minute class for hips, shoulders, forearms and recovery

A yoga class for boulderers and route climbers, for a rest day or an easy evening. It works on what climbing uses but doesn't fully train: active hip range for high steps and turning in, upper-back extension and the shoulder blades, pushing, one-leg balance, and gentle forearm stretches, then a calm finish. It doesn't train finger strength or replace the climbing warm-up, and no stretch protects a pulley. If a finger is injured, do the all-fours and plank poses on your forearms and skip the forearm block. You need a mat and a wall.

Tips

  • Do it on a rest day or after an easy session, not just before a hard finger session.
  • Before you climb, use our climbing warm-up: easy movement, joint circles, graded hangs and easy climbs, not long holds.
  • If you're very flexible, keep the hip poses in the middle of your range; aim for control, not more stretch.
  • With an injured finger, keep weight off your hands and skip the forearm block until your clinician says otherwise.
  • Pair it with our antagonist and shoulder workout or other strength training twice a week.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
