Strength and landing workout for snowboarders: legs, trunk rotation, landings and wrists

In elite snowboarders, leg strength and power go with faster times, and the FIS's experts recommend strengthening the legs, trunk and neck, keeping the spine, hips and ankles mobile, "especially in snowboarding where softer boots are used", and training landings on both legs equally. This session puts those together and adds to the site's ski fitness workout with more trunk rotation, landings, wrists and neck. No study has shown that training prevents snowboarding injuries: in a fall, wrist guards and a helmet are what the evidence supports.

Tips

  • Twice a week for 6 to 8 weeks before the season or a trip, then once a week while you're riding.
  • Keep one hard interval session a week too, such as the Norwegian 4x4, so your legs last more runs.
  • Training won't protect your wrists in a fall; wrist guards do.
  • Learn new jumps and spins on a trampoline or into an airbag first, as the FIS experts advise.
  • With a sore knee or a past ACL injury, leave out the jumps and hops until your physio clears you. Under-16s: bodyweight versions with a coach watching.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
