Racket sport warm-up

No warm-up has been shown to prevent injuries in racket sports, but warming up helps you play. This follows our warm-up guide and the structure of the tennis warm-ups that have been studied: get warm, move through your range, wake up your shoulders and forearms, then rehearse court movement. Finish with a few minutes of mini-tennis before full shots.

Tips

  • Then play mini-tennis inside the service boxes for at least 2 minutes, then groundstrokes, volleys and overheads, with serves last. In padel, start the overheads gently.
  • In padel and squash, wear eyewear made to a recognised sports standard: ordinary glasses can make an eye injury worse.
  • Over 60 or new to court sports? Leave out the landings and keep the shuttles easy: falls are the commonest cause of racket-sport injuries treated in emergency departments.
  • In hot weather, follow the heat advice of the UK's National Health Service (NHS), and stop if you feel dizzy, sick or confused.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
