Martial arts yoga: a 25-minute active-range class for hips, kicks, balance and breathing

A rest-day or after-training class for martial artists, strikers and grapplers alike. It starts with slow breathing, builds hip range you can control (the kind kicks use), trains the kicking leg and one-leg balance, looks after your wrists and upper back, and winds down. It isn't a warm-up before sparring and it won't cut weight. No study has shown that yoga prevents martial arts injuries, and a bigger stretch isn't always a better kick. You need a mat, a wall, a chair and a strap.

Tips

  • Do it after training or on a rest day, once or twice a week. Before sparring or kicking drills, use our martial arts warm-up with breakfalls.
  • Use slow breathing before training or a grading to settle, and afterwards to wind down. Skip breath holds and forceful breathing.
  • Very flexible? Keep to the strength and balance blocks, and stay short of end-range holds.
  • A pinch deep in the groin is a joint, not a stretch: stay short of it, and get a catching or locking hip checked.
  • Don't use hot yoga, saunas or sweat suits to make weight.
  • After a head knock or being choked unconscious, follow your governing body's return before the head-low moves in this class.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
