Aerial conditioning workout: pull-ups, hangs, inversions, shoulders, grip and landings for silks, hoop and trapeze
Shoulders take the largest share of circus injuries, aerial disciplines had the highest injury rates per session in a year-long study, and professional circus artists do more pull-ups and hold handstands better than pre-professionals. No programme has been tested on aerial injuries, but strength training cut injuries in other sports, a 12-week shoulder programme helped circus students with unstable shoulders, and heavier strengthening helped hypermobile shoulders a little more than light work. This session trains the climb and the inversion, shoulder control at the top of the range, the push that balances all that pulling, grip, and the legs for dismounts and floor work. You need a pull-up bar, a light band and an anchor, a pair of dumbbells or kettlebells, a step, a mat, and rings or parallel bars for the support hold.

Tips
- Twice a week, on lighter aerial days and not just before a class with a lot of climbing (our suggestion, as our climbers' workout advises for climbing).
- The calf raise programme ran once a day on workdays for 9 weeks in touring circus performers: it built calf endurance, but lower-leg injuries didn't change.
- If your shoulders are very flexible or have slipped out before, keep the rotations with your elbow by your side and stop short of any feeling of slipping. Shoulder discomfort up to about 5 out of 10 that settles by your next session is acceptable.
- After a holiday or a break, do fewer sets for the first 2 to 3 weeks (our suggestion): injuries rose after breaks at a circus college and in a professional company.
- Under 16? Bodyweight and light loads, with a qualified adult watching.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
