Diving warm-up: wrists, shoulders, spine, hips and take-off jumps on the poolside

Divers' wrists, shoulders and backs take the load of every entry, and most diving injuries happen at entry or take-off. This warm-up prepares each in turn, then rehearses the take-off arm swing. It's built on our gymnastics warm-up, because no diving warm-up has been tested. Do it on a dry, non-slip area, after checking that the bubbler is on, a coach or lifeguard is on the poolside and the water under the board is clear, then start with simple dives from the lower board. You need a light band, a mat, a strap or towel, a wall and a bench or step.

Tips

  • Before your first dive: the bubbler or sprinkler on, a coach or lifeguard watching, one diver at a time, and the water below clear. World Aquatics requires surface agitation and lifeguards trained in neck injuries at its events.
  • First dives: simple ones from the lower board, then build to your list; back and reverse dives only once you're warm and with your coach (our suggestion).
  • Swim England doesn't allow goggles in diving lessons, because of the risk of injury from head-first entries.
  • Sharp wrist pain during the rocks or entries: stop that part, and see a doctor if it's still painful the next day.
  • After a knock to the head on the board or the water: if in doubt, sit them out.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
