The atlas · Chapter three · practice four of five

The pattern with real trial evidence is not exotic: vegetables, olive oil, fish, ferments, whole grains, protein at every meal. In the first randomized trial of diet for depression, 32% reached remission versus 8% of controls.

Nutrition, the fourth practice.

The trial evidence on food and mood, the plate that costs less than the diet it replaces, and the verdicts on collagen powder and detox teas.

Practice 04 · Nutrition

You rebuild the web out of what you eat.

Collagen, the rope your fascia and skin are woven from, is built from dietary protein and cannot be made without vitamin C. Beyond raw materials, food sets your inflammatory tone.

Start today

  • Build the plate: half vegetables and fruit, a quarter protein, a quarter whole grains, olive oil on top. Protein at every meal: your collagen supply line.
  • Add 1–2 fermented foods a day (plain yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut) plus 25–35 g of fiber.
  • Drink to pale-straw urine: roughly 2–3 liters of fluids. Water is the default.
  • Last coffee by early afternoon. Caffeine can take 8+ hours to clear, and poor sleep is tomorrow's fatigue.
File under hype

“Detox teas cleanse you; collagen powder erases wrinkles; water melts fascia.”

Detox products remove nothing your liver wasn't already handling, and carry documented harms. Collagen supplements show modest, largely industry-funded benefits; food-first delivers the same building blocks. And drinking extra water doesn't un-stick fascia. Hydration is the background condition; movement is what pumps fluid through the tissue.

Food also talks to your brain through the gut: trillions of microbes signaling up the vagus nerve. The pattern with real trial evidence isn't exotic — vegetables, olive oil, fish, ferments, whole grains — and it costs less than the diet it replaces.

  1. In the first randomized trial of diet for clinical depression, 32% of adults on a Mediterranean-style pattern reached remission in 12 weeks. Among controls, 8% did.

  2. A fermented-food diet raised microbiome diversity and lowered 19 inflammatory proteins in 10 weeks. Fiber alone didn't do it. Eat both.

    evidence · strongWastyk, Cell 2021

  3. Low-glycemic eating reduced acne lesions in randomized trials and shrank oil glands on biopsy. Chronic sugar excess also stiffens collagen through glycation.

    evidence · strongSmith 2007 · Kwon 2012

  4. Each 10% increase in ultra-processed food intake is associated with ~11% higher depression risk, consistent across cohorts, though observational.

  5. Mild dehydration, before you feel thirsty, measurably worsens mood, concentration, and headache.
