Do vagus gadgets and ice baths reset anything?

The verdictevidence · mixed

the free tool keeps winning

Slow breathing does most of what vagus-reset products promise, for free, and with better evidence. Breathing near six breaths per minute reliably raises vagal heart-rate variability. Five minutes of daily cyclic sighing improved mood more than meditation in a randomized trial. Consumer stimulation gadgets show early, mixed results. Cold plunges acutely spike stress hormones by design, and their mood and immune trials are inconsistent. Cold water carries real risks.

What works instead

Two physiological sighs at any stress spike: inhale, top it up with a second sniff, one long slow exhale. Five minutes of slow breathing daily, exhale longer than inhale. Twenty minutes under trees, and sleep protected like an appointment. Before buying anything with vagus in the name, spend a week doing sighs for free. That is the control condition the gadgets are afraid of.

About the cold

Cold-water immersion carries genuine cardiac and drowning risks. The influencer footage never mentions them. If cold water makes you feel alive and you are healthy and sensible about it, enjoy it as an experiment, not a foundation.

Your exhale is the gadget. It ships free.
