Brick workout for beginners: easy bike, then an easy run
Running straight after cycling feels heavy and costs more energy than running fresh: 1.6% to 11.6% more in Olympic-distance triathletes. A brick practises the change at an easy effort. Whether bricks improve the transition hasn't been tested, so treat this as getting used to it rather than a fitness secret. Keep both parts easy enough to talk in sentences, as our zone 2 guide describes.

Tips
- Once a week or once a fortnight in the last 6 to 8 weeks before your race.
- Build your running gradually: single runs much longer than your longest of the past month went with more injuries, as our running page explains.
- On a hot day, drink to thirst and know the signs of heat exhaustion; call 999 for heatstroke.
- New to exercise, or have a heart condition, chest pain, dizziness or fainting? Check with your GP first.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
