Make it easier or harder

Easier option

This is already one of the gentlest options for these muscles.

Source-researched guide. Clinical review is pending.

How to move

  1. Sit with both feet flat, knees bent, the heel and ball of the foot on the floor.
  2. Keep the other toes long and relaxed.
  3. Press the big toe down into the floor, as if pushing a button, without lifting the heel or the ball of the foot.
  4. Hold for up to 10 seconds, breathing normally.
  5. Relax fully, then repeat.

Form cues

  • Big toe only; the other toes stay soft.
  • Press, don't curl.
  • Avoid: rolling the foot outwards or lifting the arch to cheat.

Practice and cautions

10 holds of 10 seconds, once a day: the toe-flexor holds in the SIMPLE trial's home routine for big toe arthritis. For bunions, 10 holds of 5 to 10 seconds is an editorial starting point; the bunion trial's summary gives session numbers, not sets.

With big toe arthritis, press within comfort, and skip it while the joint is hot and swollen. This is movement education, not an assessment or treatment prescription. Stop for sharp or increasing pain, dizziness, numbness or tingling; seek individual guidance for symptoms, injury or restrictions.
