Balance, agility and speed workout for roller skaters: the 4-week school team programme

In a randomised trial, boys aged 11 to 14 on a school skating team did this session twice a week for 4 weeks instead of their usual physical education (PE) classes, and their skating speed test improved by 1.3 seconds more, with faster agility and running speed tests too. This is the trial's session as published: a 10-minute warm-up, then balance, then agility round cones, then speed, with 2 minutes' rest between the three parts. It hasn't been tested in girls or adults, and no programme has been tested on skating injuries. The catalog has no cone drills yet, so shuttle runs stand in for them.

Tips

  • Twice a week on days that aren't next to each other, for 4 weeks, as in the trial (it used Wednesdays and Fridays).
  • Do it off skates, in trainers, on a flat sports surface, as the trial did.
  • Keep your skating practice too: the trial's skaters did this in place of PE, not of skating (our reading).
  • Girls and adults can use the same structure, though the trial was in boys aged 11 to 14 (our suggestion).

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
