Face a low step and place one whole foot on it. Press through that heel to stand up on top without pushing off the trailing foot, then lower yourself back to the floor slowly. Alternate legs each set.

The step has to be stable and non slip. Hold a rail while you are learning, lower yourself under control instead of dropping off the edge, and reduce the height before you add weight.
