Ski warm-up

No study has tested a ski warm-up, so this is our routine, built on the site's warm-up guide: raise your temperature, move the joints you're about to use, then rehearse the stance. Do it at the top of your first run, and again after a long lunch or a cold lift ride. Then make your first run an easy one.

Tips

  • Make your first run an easy one, on a slope you know.
  • Keep any static stretch to under a minute per muscle, as the site's warm-up guide advises.
  • Check your bindings are set and tested: in a trial, an instructional video that got skiers testing their bindings went with fewer injuries.
  • Wear a helmet, and wrist guards if you snowboard.
  • If you fall, keep your arms forward, don't land on your hand, and stay down until you've stopped sliding.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
