With the knees bent and the feet held down, the spine curls and the hips flex until the trunk is upright, then lowers three-quarters of the way and repeats: the hip flexors join in and the spine bears more load than in the curl-up or crunch.

These tiers compare demands within this family, not universal safety or a mandatory sequence. Load, range, balance and your circumstances can change difficulty. Choose deliberately; pain does not select a progression.

How to move
Lie on your back with the knees bent and the feet anchored, the hands at the sides of your head.
Curl the spine and flex the hips to bring the trunk up until it is upright over the hips.
Lower under control about three-quarters of the way down, then come up again.
Form cues
Curl up through the spine rather than swinging up from the hips.
Lower slowly; don't drop back.
Practice and cautions
No universal dose is assigned. Choose a manageable amount for your current capacity, leave room for controlled repetitions, and allow recovery. A clinician’s individual plan takes priority.
Sit-ups load the lumbar spine more than curl-ups; skip them if bending forward aggravates your back. This is movement education, not an assessment or treatment prescription. Stop for sharp or increasing pain, dizziness, numbness or tingling; seek individual guidance for symptoms, injury or restrictions.
