Forearm stand progression

For people with no reason to skip going upside down (see our forearm stand guide): skip it with glaucoma unless your eye specialist agrees, while high blood pressure isn't controlled, with neck problems or a recent shoulder injury, and don't start learning it in pregnancy. Check your overhead reach at a wall first. The order follows yoga teaching practice and the doses are our starting point; no trial has tested them.

Tips

  • Stay at the wall until both heels lift off it with control. A forearm stand that tips too far falls into a backbend.
  • Don't kick hard: walk your hips over your shoulders and lift lightly.
  • Come down at once if you feel pressure in your head or neck.
  • Keep holds short: eye pressure stays raised while you're upside down, and no study shows longer holds help.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
