Strong-and-steady Pilates for teenagers: a 25-minute class for trunk, hips, posture and a calm finish
A 25-minute Pilates class for teenagers: trunk and hip strength, back and shoulder-blade work for posture, some balance, and a few minutes of slow breathing to finish. Do it once or twice a week alongside sport, running about and, if you want, a strength session: it isn't all the activity you need. It leaves out upside-down moves such as the roll-over and jack knife.

Tips
- This is one part of an active week: you also need an average of an hour a day of activity that gets you out of breath, with running and jumping for your bones.
- Strength training is fine for teenagers with good teaching: our strength workout for teenagers is the next step.
- If your back hurts when you arch, skip the swan and swimming and do the bird dog; if the pain lasts more than a couple of weeks, get it checked.
- If your joints are very bendy, keep every move in the middle of your range.
- Track what your body can do, not how it looks. If food, weight or exercise is worrying you, talk to someone: Childline (0800 1111), Beat or your GP.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
