Strap stretching routine: assisted stretching on your own
A strap, belt or towel does what a stretching partner does: it holds your leg in a stretch while you relax, and gives you something to push against for contract-relax. In a trial, contract-relax with a strap gained as much range as the same stretch with a partner. Holding and contract-relax stretches build the most lasting range, mostly because your nervous system learns to accept more stretch, so doing this regularly matters more than going deep. The doses are starting points, from each move's page or our own.

Tips
- A partner can hold the strap for you, but in a trial a partner added no extra range over a strap.
- Stretch to a clear pull you can breathe through, never pain: gentle stretching builds range as well as hard.
- For lasting range, do this on most days. Expect it to feel easier within a few weeks, with a clear gain by 4 to 6 weeks.
- Tingling, burning or numbness down the leg is a nerve under tension, not a stretch: bend the knee and ease off.
- After a hip replacement, check with your team first: several of these stretches bend the hip past 90 degrees or take the leg across your body.
- With osteoporosis, keep your back long in the seated stretch, or do the lying hamstring stretch instead.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
