Horizontal back extension (hyperextension, Roman chair)

These tiers compare demands within this family, not universal safety or a mandatory sequence. Load, range, balance and your circumstances can change difficulty. Choose deliberately; pain does not select a progression.

How to move
Lie face down on the horizontal chair with the upper thighs across the pad and the ankles under the rollers, the arms crossed on the chest or the hands behind the head.
Bend forward at the hips as far as you can with the back flat.
Rise until the body is straight, level with the floor and no higher, then lower slowly.
Form cues
Stop at straight; don't arch past level.
Hands behind the head make it harder; crossed on the chest, easier.
Practice and cautions
No universal dose is assigned. Choose a manageable amount for your current capacity, leave room for controlled repetitions, and allow recovery. A clinician’s individual plan takes priority.
Move slowly with osteoporosis or if arching aggravates your back, and never fling into the top. This is movement education, not an assessment or treatment prescription. Stop for sharp or increasing pain, dizziness, numbness or tingling; seek individual guidance for symptoms, injury or restrictions.
