How to move
- Set a bench to roughly a 30 degree incline and lie back with a dumbbell in each hand at upper-chest level, feet planted on the floor. Press both weights up until your arms are straight above your upper chest, then lower them under control.
Practice and cautions
3 to 4 sets of 6 to 12 reps, leaving about 2 reps in reserve.
You will press less than on a flat bench, so lower the weight rather than your standards. Start with the dumbbells on your knees and kick them back one at a time as you lie down; if a rep fails, lower the weights to your chest and tip them out to the sides rather than fighting them over your face. Much steeper than 45 degrees turns it into a shoulder press.
