Yoga for hip flexors: a 25-minute stretch-and-strengthen class for the front of the hip

A 25-minute yoga class for the front of the hip. It warms up, lengthens the hip flexors in lunges and warriors with the tailbone tucked, then strengthens them with a held knee lift, boat pose and leg lifts, works the back of the hip and finishes with a rest. Stretching and strength work through the full range both add range, so the class does both, following our tight hip flexors routine. Do it 2 or 3 times a week. No trial has tested yoga for the hip flexors, so the structure is our editorial choice. With a fresh hip flexor strain, start with the strength work in our hip flexor pain guide and leave the stretches until loading is comfortable.

Tips

  • With a strained hip flexor, our hip flexor pain guide's first stage: "The first one to two weeks; keep pain at 3 out of 10 or less." Do the strength block before the stretches, and leave the stretches out until loading is comfortable.
  • Otherwise, our hip guides' rule: "During the exercise, pain up to about 5 out of 10 is acceptable. It should settle within an hour or so, and your hip should be no worse that night or the next morning. If it is, do less next time (fewer repetitions, a smaller range, a lighter load), not nothing."
  • In every lunge, come out if the front hip pinches at the crease rather than stretching, as the lizard pose page says. A pinch deep in the front of the hip is covered in our yoga for a hip labral tear guide.
  • Older adults or anyone unsteady: do the lunges with a hand on a chair, and boat pose with your feet on the floor (our suggestion).

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
