Dryland workout for swimmers
Adding strength training to swimming improved performance by about 2 to 2.5% in a review of 27 studies, and beat swimming alone. Jumps come first, while you're fresh, because jump height tracks how well you start; then heavy pulling, legs and trunk. Keep it to twice a week, away from your hardest pool sessions, and stop anything that pinches your shoulder.

Tips
- Twice a week, after easier pool sessions or on separate days, with the jumps first while you're fresh.
- Swimming already loads your shoulders hard, so this session pulls heavy and leaves out overhead pressing; the shoulder care routine covers the rotator cuff.
- Mild shoulder discomfort, up to about 5 out of 10 and settled by the next session, is fine; stop for sharp, pinching or worsening pain.
- Under 16? Have a coach teach and supervise the lifts, and keep the loads moderate.
- Cut the dryland volume in the last week or two before a key meet.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
