Cricket warm-up

No cricket warm-up has been tested on injury rates, so this one is ours, built on our warm-up guide: raise your heart rate, move your hips, trunk and shoulders through their range, wake up your trunk and legs, then rehearse sprinting, turning, throwing and bowling. It takes about 12 minutes before nets, fielding practice or a match. For bowlers aged 19 and under, run-throughs at or near full pace count towards the day's overs under the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) limits. You need a light resistance band and a ball, and a partner for the catches.

Tips

  • Bowlers: finish with 4 to 6 run-throughs at half, three-quarter and then full pace. Fielders: throws building from 10 to 30 m.
  • For bowlers aged 19 and under, balls bowled at or near match intensity count towards the ECB's limits, in the nets too.
  • Keep Nordics and Copenhagen planks for the strength workout, and out of the 48 hours before a match (our suggestion).
  • Under-18s must wear a helmet with a faceguard or grille whenever they bat against a hard ball, nets included.
  • Back pain that lasts more than a couple of weeks or hurts when you arch back: stop bowling and get it checked, as our spondylolisthesis guide advises.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
