Hamstring workout: Romanian deadlifts, curls and Nordics

Your hamstrings straighten your hip and bend your knee, and trials grow them with both jobs: the Romanian deadlift for the hip, curls for the knee. This session pairs them, adds a single-leg hinge, and finishes with Nordic curls once you're ready. Do it once or twice a week, on a different day from heavy deadlifts. After a hamstring strain, or with pain at the sitting bone, follow our hamstring guides instead.

Tips

  • The floor isn't the target in the Romanian deadlift: stop where your hamstrings stop you, with your back still long.
  • Seated leg curls grew the hamstrings more than lying curls in a 12-week trial, but use whichever machine you have.
  • Nordic curls halved hamstring injuries in sport. Start small, and expect sore hamstrings for a few days after the first sessions.
  • A deep ache at the sitting bone that's worse when you sit? Follow our high hamstring tendinopathy guide instead: no hamstring stretches and no deep hinging at first.
  • A sudden sharp pain at the back of the thigh, sometimes with a pop: stop, and see our hamstring strain guide.
  • Add reps until every set reaches the top of the range, then add weight.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
