Rest-day Pilates for lifters: a 25-minute class for trunk endurance, the hinge, hips, ankles and the upper back, breathing out on every effort

A 25-minute Pilates class for a rest day or after lifting. It works the positions lifters ask about (the ankles and hips for the squat, the hinge, the upper back for arms overhead) and trunk endurance against bending, arching and turning, breathing out on every effort. It won't build strength or muscle the way progressive lifting does, and it isn't a warm-up for heavy sets. No trial has tested this class.

Tips

  • On a rest day or after lifting, once or twice a week; not in the hour before heavy sets (our suggestion).
  • Breathe out on every effort here. Save any braced, held breath for heavy sets, and skip it with the conditions our breathing guide lists.
  • If you leak when you lift, add pelvic floor training most days, and see our Pilates for the pelvic floor guide.
  • This class doesn't replace your lifting: progressive loading builds strength and muscle.
  • With a sore shoulder, keep the wall angels small and leave out the Y of the Y-T-W raises.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
