Plank challenge workout

The session for the 30-day plank challenge. Hold each plank only while you keep a straight line, usually 3 holds of 20 to 45 seconds; once 3 holds of 45 seconds are steady, move to a harder plank instead of holding longer. Do only your step in each block: the plan's weekly phases set your holds and steps, and the doses here are the range. Breathe the whole time.

Tips

  • End each hold when your hips start to sink, then rest and repeat.
  • Harder, not longer: once 3 holds of 45 seconds are steady, move to the next plank. In the plan, no training hold goes beyond about 60 seconds.
  • Breathe normally throughout; counting out loud helps. Holding your breath raises blood pressure.
  • Test your longest hold at the start and the end of the month, not every day.
  • After giving birth, start with the gentle tummy exercises the NHS describes before planks, and see the postpartum guide. With heart failure, skip planks: the British Heart Foundation advises avoiding them.
  • Back pain that planks make worse: do the McGill big 3 and side planks instead, and see the back pain guide.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
