Yoga for fascia release: a 27-minute flow-then-hold class

Flow first, to warm up and move in many directions, then hold a few poses where you want range, then rest. No trial has measured fascia after yoga: what this changes is mostly range, comfort and how much stretch you tolerate. Hold where the stretch is clear but not painful, and come out at once for tingling, numbness or sharp pain.

Tips

  • Holds of 30 to 60 seconds are enough for range; the 90-second holds are for calm, not extra fascia change.
  • If you're hypermobile, stay in the middle of your range, keep the muscles lightly working and shorten the holds.
  • In later pregnancy, avoid lying flat on your back for more than a few minutes: do the twist and the rest lying on your side.
  • With glaucoma, keep downward dog and child's pose brief and rest your forehead on a support.
  • Stop straight away if you feel any pain or become unwell, and come up slowly from forward folds.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
