How to move
- Load a sturdy backpack so the weight sits high and snug against your upper back, then walk at a purposeful pace. Start at about 10 per cent of bodyweight, keep your normal walking posture rather than hanging off the straps, and use routes and hills to set the difficulty.
Practice and cautions
2 rucks a week of 30 to 45 minutes at about 10 per cent of bodyweight, adding either load or time in small steps, never both at once.
Military load carriage research puts overuse injury of the back and lower limbs top of the list, and risk climbs with load. Stay under roughly 30 per cent of bodyweight, keep the pack high and tight so it does not swing, and let sore shoulders or hot spots on the feet end a session early.
