Pilates

Both-ways Pilates for cricketers: a 25-minute class for rotation, trunk and side endurance, the hips and hamstrings, both shoulders and front-leg balance, with no back bends

A 25-minute Pilates class for a rest day or after a long day in the field. It turns the trunk the same amount both ways, builds trunk and side endurance with the spine long, works the hips, hamstrings and groin, trains the shoulder blades and the back of the shoulder on both arms, and finishes with front-leg balance and slow breathing. There are no back bends, on purpose, for young fast bowlers' backs. It doesn't replace the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) bowling limits, the cricket warm-up or your strength work. No trial has tested this class.

Tips

  • Once or twice a week, on a rest day or after a long day in the field; not in the hour before you bowl (our suggestion).
  • There are no back bends in this class on purpose. A teenage fast bowler with back pain that lasts more than a couple of weeks, is worse arching back or stops them bowling should stop fast bowling and see a GP or sports physiotherapist, as our spondylolisthesis guide advises.
  • Do every rotation the same number of times both ways, whichever way you bowl or bat.
  • This adds to the ECB's bowling limits, the cricket warm-up and the strength workout for fast bowlers; it doesn't replace them, and no study has shown that Pilates prevents cricket injuries.
  • After a side strain, leave out the side plank and the criss-cross until your physiotherapist clears them (our suggestion).

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
