Yoga for sprinters: a 25-minute recovery-day class for hip flexors, hamstrings and the trunk

A 25-minute class for sprinters and hurdlers, for rest days, after easy or tempo sessions, or the evening. It lengthens the hip flexors with the glute working and then strengthens them, works the hamstrings before a mild stretch, builds hip and trunk control and one-leg balance, and ends with a slow wind-down. Don't do it in the hours before speed work or within 24 to 48 hours of a race. It doesn't prevent hamstring strains or replace sprinting, strength and conditioning or rehab. The structure is our own and untested.

Tips

  • Once or twice a week on rest days or after easy sessions, never just before speed work or a race: long holds can sap power for a while.
  • Keep your strength and hamstring workout: yoga is an extra, not a swap. No study shows yoga or stretching prevents hamstring strains.
  • After a hamstring strain, use our hamstring injury class until sprinting is pain-free.
  • If arching hurts your lower back, leave out locust, keep the lunges upright and see the warning signs on our yoga for sprinters guide.
  • Stop and call 999 for chest pain or fainting, during this class or any exercise.
  • No trial has tested this class as a whole; its doses come from our yoga for hip flexors, footballers, hamstring injury, strength and rugby classes.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
