Yoga for Parkinson's: a 30-minute class at a counter, sitting then standing
A 30-minute yoga class built on the trials of yoga in Parkinson's and on Parkinson's balance advice. Do it in an "on" time, when your medicines are working well, next to a kitchen counter or the back of a sturdy chair. Make every movement big and slow, pump your feet before you stand, and turn in a half circle rather than on the spot. It adds to, and doesn't replace, your medicines, physiotherapy, and the walking or cycling and strength work in our exercise for Parkinson's guide.

Tips
- Do it in an "on" time, when your medicines are working well.
- Before you stand, pump your feet up and down 10 times and get up slowly. Stand still until you feel steady, but not for long. If you feel dizzy or faint, sit with your legs raised or lie down until it passes.
- Keep the counter within reach, turn in a half circle rather than on the spot, and don't talk while you move.
- If you freeze, stop, take a breath, shift your weight onto one leg and step off with the other.
- Twice a week, with walking or cycling on 3 days and strength work on 2, covers what the Parkinson's Foundation and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend.
- Keep the room cool and skip hot yoga: heat can lower your blood pressure.
- After any fall, see your GP. Call 999 (911 in the US) if someone may have hurt their head, neck, back or hip, or can't get up.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
