Yoga for opening the chest: a 25-minute class for the chest, shoulders and upper back

A 25-minute yoga class that opens the front of your chest and shoulders and moves your upper back, then strengthens the muscles between your shoulder blades, and ends lying over a support. Chest stretches feel good and keep your shoulders moving, but stretching on its own hasn't been shown to change posture; the back lifts are the part that changed posture, a little, in trials. Keep your neck long in every backbend, and stop if you feel dizzy or tingly. Chest pain needs checking, not stretching: call 999 for chest pain that is sudden, feels tight or spreads.

Tips

  • Stretch to a clear pull across the chest or the front of the shoulder, never pain; tingling or numbness into the arm means ease off or bring the arm lower.
  • Do the class 2 or 3 times a week; the back lifts count towards strength work on at least 2 days a week.
  • Keep the back of your neck long in sphinx, cobra and locust, and come out at once if you feel dizzy or your sight blurs.
  • Chest pain is never a stretching job: call 999 for chest pain that is sudden, feels tight or spreads, or comes with breathlessness, sweating or feeling sick. Our yoga for opening the chest guide lists the signs.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
