Cool-down routine: 10 minutes after any workout
Ease off first, then stretch while you're warm. A few minutes of easier movement lets your heart rate and breathing settle, and after a hard or long effort it helps you avoid the light-headedness that can come from stopping dead, though no trial has tested that. A cool-down won't stop you being sore tomorrow or prevent injuries, so the stretches are there for comfort and flexibility. Pick the ones for the muscles you used; every lying stretch has a standing swap.

Tips
- After a race or hard intervals, keep walking rather than standing still or sitting straight down. If you feel faint, lie down and raise your legs, or sit with your head low, and drink some water. Call 999 (911 in the US) if someone faints while exercising.
- Stretch to mild tension, never pain, and keep breathing. Legs after a run or ride, chest and shoulders after an upper-body session.
- This is for comfort and flexibility: stretching afterwards doesn't stop next-day soreness or speed recovery.
- With a heart condition, follow the longer cool-down your rehab team gives you, usually at least 10 minutes, and leave lying stretches until your breathing has settled.
- On blood pressure medicines, make the easy part longer and stand up slowly from the floor.
- Later in pregnancy, avoid lying flat on your back for more than a few minutes: swap the lying stretches for standing ones.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
