Foam rolling & fascia
Fascia release for the back
Most of the benefit for an achy back comes from moving it and strengthening it. Back-pain guidelines recommend exercise first, with hands-on treatment only alongside it. Rolling is optional comfort: keep it on the upper back and the muscles beside the spine, never pressing on the spine itself.

Tips
- Call 999 or go to A&E for back pain with numbness around the genitals or anus, bladder or bowel changes, or weakness or numbness in both legs.
- There is no lower-back rolling here on purpose. No study we found shows it helps or harms; rotation and bird dog are the better-supported choice.
- Ask a clinician before rolling the upper back or ribs if you have osteoporosis.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
