Swim workout for beginners: lengths, rests and a steady continuous swim

The Tuesday and Friday swims of our sprint triathlon training plan, whose phases set each week's main set, from 8 lengths of 25 m with rests to a continuous 750 m. Any stroke counts, in training and in races, and rolling onto your back to rest is fine. Swim easily enough to breathe calmly, and rest about 30 seconds after each repeat.

Tips

  • Can't swim front crawl yet? Breaststroke or backstroke is fine in training and in races. Adult swimming lessons or a club help with front crawl.
  • Breathe out under the water, and if you're gasping, slow down or switch strokes.
  • Build the distance gradually. If a shoulder hurts, cut your distance and see the shoulder care routine for swimmers.
  • Choose a lane that suits your speed, and follow the pool's lane rules.
  • Chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or a cough with frothy or pink spit: stop, get out of the water and get help.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
