Gentle exercises for period pain
In trials, women who exercised regularly through the month, about three times a week, had less period pain than women who didn't, whether they did yoga, stretching, walking or strength training. The evidence is low quality, so the real effect may be smaller than the trials suggest: use this alongside heat and painkillers, not instead of them. The cobra, cat and fish poses come from a trial in students with period pain.

Tips
- Do it about three times a week through the whole month, not only on painful days: that's how the trials used exercise.
- On painful days, do whichever parts feel good. A hot water bottle on your tummy and painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol also help, as the NHS suggests.
- Add walks, cycling or strength sessions on other days: aerobic and strength training reduced period pain in trials too.
- See a GP if the pain is severe, getting worse or stopping you doing everyday things.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
