Yoga for legs: a 25-minute strength and stretch routine for thighs, glutes and calves
A 25-minute yoga routine for stronger, steadier, more flexible legs. Standing holds work the front of your thighs, one-leg poses your buttocks and the side of your hips, and bridges and locust the back of your legs; calf and toe raises cover the lower legs, which yoga poses barely load. Then stretch the front of your hips, your hamstrings and your buttocks, and rest with your legs up the wall. Hold each strength pose until your legs need a short rest, and keep your knees over your toes.

Tips
- Two or three times a week, on days that aren't back to back. Work each hold until your legs need a short rest: that's the NHS test for a strength session.
- Make it harder over the weeks: bend a little deeper, hold a little longer, lift a heel or a leg, or move slowly in and out of chair pose. For more strength or muscle, add squats, lunges or step-ups with weights.
- Knees: short stances, knees over your second toe, shallow bends at first. Stop for sharp, catching or giving-way pain, or new swelling.
- Hold each stretch for 30 to 60 seconds; to gain flexibility, stretch on most days.
- No routine slims or tones one part of your body: training one leg didn't take fat off that leg in a trial. What changes is strength, balance and range.
- With glaucoma or high blood pressure that isn't under control, keep the head-down parts of the sun salutations brief, and your hips flat in legs up the wall.
- Pregnant? After the first trimester, swap the bridges for side-lying or all-fours work, and skip the one-leg and wide poses if you have pelvic girdle pain.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
