How to move
- Stand with the bar over the middle of your feet, hinge down and grip it just outside your legs. Push the floor away and drag the bar up your shins and thighs until you stand tall, then lower it back down the same path under control.
Practice and cautions
3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps, leaving 2 to 3 reps in reserve; add weight only when every rep looks the same.
If a rep stalls or your back starts to round, put the bar down: there is no saving a deadlift and no need to, because the floor catches it. Most trouble comes from a sloppy setup or lifting tired, so treat every rep as its own lift and reset between them.
