Gym workout for seniors: machine strength training for muscle loss
Strength training is the first treatment for sarcopenia, the loss of muscle strength with age, and machines let you add weight without having to balance. This session uses the 7 machines in the UK prescription for sarcopenia, twice a week, for at least 12 weeks. The starting dose and how to progress are our editorial reading of that prescription and an international guideline, not a tested programme. Ask a gym instructor to set up each machine the first time, and speak to a GP (general practitioner) first if you have heart disease or another condition, or haven't exercised for a while.

Tips
- Do this twice a week, at least 48 hours apart (for example, Monday and Thursday), for at least 12 weeks, then keep going. If you're very weak, once a week is a good start. That's the UK prescription for sarcopenia.
- Start light enough to learn each machine, at a moderate effort. When you can do 12 good repetitions with a couple to spare, add the smallest weight step (our editorial progression rule).
- Lift briskly and lower slowly once your technique is right: fast lifting builds power, which helps you get up from a chair and catch yourself if you trip.
- Breathe out on each effort rather than holding your breath. With heart disease or high blood pressure, speak to your GP or cardiac team before starting.
- If you're frail or have fallen, build strength and balance before brisk walking, and ask your GP about a falls service or a supervised class.
- Protein helps most alongside training: our protein calculator gives the guideline amounts. With kidney disease, ask your kidney team before changing your protein.
The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
