3-minute desk movement break

Short, frequent breaks beat long, rare ones. This break uses the kind of 3-minute standing moves that broke up sitting in trials, plus two moves for the upper back and neck. No floor, no kit and no change of clothes.

Tips

  • Set a reminder every 30 to 60 minutes: in the trial behind these moves, the breaks came every 30 minutes, and the UK's Health and Safety Executive says short, frequent breaks are better than long, rare ones.
  • On a call? March and do calf raises while you talk.
  • If standing is hard, do 2 minutes of seated marching, then the turns and chin tucks sitting down.
  • These breaks help you sit less and feel less stiff; they are not a treatment, so see the sitting guide's warning signs if aches don't settle.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
