Knee control warm-up

Knock-kneed bones don't change with exercise, but knees that cave in during squats and landings can be trained. Do this 2 to 3 times a week, or before sport. Watch your knees in a mirror or on video and keep them over your middle toes.

Tips

  • When landings are quiet, progress to box drop landings from a low step, then the single-leg hop and stick.
  • If your knee hurts, follow the knee pain guide's pain rule, and stop for a knee that swells, locks or gives way.
  • Children don't need this for knock knees: active play is enough.
  • For team sports, a full warm-up with cutting and agility drills, done 2 to 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes, has the best evidence for preventing ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries.

The doses are suggested starting points, not a prescription. Choose a range you can control and stop for sharp or increasing pain, numbness or tingling. Get individual advice after an injury or surgery, or if you are pregnant or managing a health condition.
