How to move
- Standing with a barbell or two dumbbells at shoulder height, brace the ribs down, then press the weight straight overhead until the arms lock and the biceps sit near your ears. Lower under control to the shoulders.
Practice and cautions
3 to 4 sets of 5 to 8 reps, adding a small amount of weight once the top set feels easy.
Clear the space overhead and behind you, and decide in advance how you will lower or drop a failed rep. Avoid straining against a held breath if your blood pressure is uncontrolled. If you cannot get the arms overhead without arching, press at an incline or one arm at a time until the range improves.
